Your Purpose is your Soul’s Expression
We have intellectual needs so we read and learn and seek knowledge and stimulation.
We have emotional needs and we seek fulfilling, loving relationships.
We need comfort and so we work to provide a home and other things to enjoy.
We have aesthetic needs and we hang art and visit galleries and listen to music.
We have physical needs and we eat and drink and exercise.
Our Soul has needs and we generally neglect them. Our Soul needs to connect with that which is greater than ourselves; call it God, the Universe, the Divine, Energy, whatever floats your boat. And it needs to live its purpose. It needs to be purposeful.
You can believe we’re here for a purpose or not, it doesn’t much matter. What matters is that when we’re living a purposeful life we’re happier and more fulfilled. And that happiness and fulfilment comes from more than just our emotional, aesthetic and intellectual fulfilment, although those can certainly go a long way, and indeed we can get rather caught up in them and forget about our spiritual Self.
Maybe you’ve always believed you have a purpose in being here, or maybe the idea of finding your purpose has popped into your head since your kids have grown and/or you’ve reached middle age, and/or you’re no longer feeling it with the work you’re doing.
Whatever it is that’s got you thinking about your purpose, I believe it’s your spiritual Self calling out to you. You can believe you have a soul or not, it doesn’t matter, but you do have a spiritual Self that’s different from the other parts of you and has different needs. If you like you can think about it in terms of Maslow and his hierarchy of needs: self-actualization, the apex of life.
So. How to find your purpose?
- Connect! Connect any way you can. Prayer, meditation, mindfulness, nature.
- Seek inspiration from the many sources from which it is available.
- Explore spirituality.
- Be open to new possibilities. Be prepared to let go of long-held beliefs.
- Let go your judgements.
- Let go the past.
- Let go of anger.
- Love whoever is around to be loved.
Life is short. Live it.
