It’s not about the job.
One of the expectations people have in wanting to find their purpose, is wanting to find the job that’s right for them. If that’s all you’re looking for, please see a careers counselor.
However, I can almost guarantee that whilst many people think this is what they want, it’s probably not in fact.
What I find is true is that most people are looking for meaning, and to be able to do meaningful work. And for the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution. ‘Making a difference’ and ‘giving back’ are two things I hear a lot from my clients. Along with the idea that they believe they are here for a reason.
What I also find is that when people are using these kinds of words, they’ve generally gone beyond the idea of ‘job’ and they know they’re looking for something bigger than that, and in various ways I can see that this is an aspect of people’s spiritual views and their view of the world. There’s an increasing awareness that the world has a lot of challenges and people want to make some commitment to healing it.
I also see that most people are not so clear where to start. Because they know if it was just about a job it would be a whole lot simpler; that somehow, it’s more complicated than that, but just how to think about it and where to start is beyond them.
This is generally because we’ve never thought about it much before, if at all.
I have come to understand that it is my Spiritual Self that desires meaning. And that finding one’s purpose is a significant aspect of the fulfillment of one’s Spiritual Self. This doesn’t have to be about religion or God or any other such belief, although consideration of these comes into it for many people.
Thinking about what is meaningful for you is a key factor in finding your purpose. And as this is a spiritual need and a spiritual process, then building your connection to Spirit will help you. And it is your connection and not someone else’s.
